Traditional SEO built for Google is losing ground to AI search. Generative Engine Optimization isn't a trend — it's where discovery already moved.
The number that changes everything
Google's AI Overviews now appear in 13% of all searches — double what it was in early 2025. Gartner forecasts a 25% drop in traditional search volume by end of 2026. The clicks that used to land on your blog are now absorbed into AI-generated answers that either name your brand — or don't.
LinkedIn called GEO one of its Big Ideas for 2026. WPP's Chief AI Officer was blunt: "SEO will remain a crucial tool, but its dominance is ending."
What GEO actually is
Generative Engine Optimization is structuring your content so AI platforms — ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot — cite you in their answers. Traditional SEO competed for one of ten blue links. GEO competes for one of two to seven citations inside an AI response. The audience is the same. The game is different.
What AI rewards that Google didn't
Topic depth over keyword density. Structured, direct answers over long-form padding. Named, credentialed authors over anonymous content teams. Presence across credible external sources — not just your own domain.
The LinkedIn signal
LinkedIn is now the #2 most cited source in AI search. Google's May 2026 AI Mode update surfaces LinkedIn posts inside AI-generated answers with the author's handle. A well-optimized LinkedIn article can now appear in AI Overviews. That's a distribution channel that didn't exist a year ago.
The window
Most brands haven't updated their content strategy for this. The AI search results aren't saturated yet. The brands that build GEO into their stack now earn compounding visibility advantages.
The window is open. It won't stay that way.
